Retaining Wall Drainage and Digging in Launceston

Digging and filling for a retaining wall has its own limits. The State's Determination sets the maximum cut or fill at 500 mm within 1.5 m of a boundary, and for a Category 2 wall says filling or excavation must not adversely affect sewer, stormwater or water utility infrastructure. Before You Dig Australia says to lodge an enquiry before digging.

What retaining wall drainage and digging in Launceston actually involves

The Director of Building Control's Determination puts the digging and filling limits in its Standard Limitations, which low-risk work must meet, and the Category 2 line on utilities in the wall's own entry. If work does not comply with the limits it is not low-risk work, and the Determination says work larger than a category permits is considered against the next category.

Before you dig

Before You Dig Australia says an enquiry is free to lodge, though asset owners may in some instances charge to supply the information. Lodge it before the machine arrives, so the provider knows what lies under the site.

What no source we read says

We did not find a government page that says how a retaining wall should be drained, and this site does not say. Meander Valley Council, a neighbouring council and not Launceston, says in its own checklist that plumbing works for a low-risk wall are limited to stormwater drainage only, with stormwater managed so as not to cause a nuisance to neighbouring properties under the Urban Drainage Act 2013. That is one council's checklist, not Launceston's rule. For a Category 2 wall the Determination says the wall is engineer designed; drainage behind a wall is a question to put to the engineer.

Say in your enquiry where the wall would sit in relation to a boundary and any pipes or drains you know of. The provider will want to know before the quote.
