Retaining Walls prices in Launceston
This page sets no price: no government source states what a retaining wall costs, and a figure from a sales page would be the seller's number, not yours. It shows the rules that can decide a wall's scope before any rate matters, each with the page it comes from, whose rule it is and the date it was read.

The Tasmanian lines that can apply to building a retaining wall in Launceston, each with the government page it comes from and the date it was read. The wall limits are the State's (the Director of Building Control's Determination), not the City's. They turn on the height of the ground the wall holds back and where it is, so check your wall with a Building Surveyor and the City's Building Department before work starts.

| The Determination lists retaining walls with no height limit under Category 3, Notifiable Building Work, which it says can only be done where a Building Surveyor is engaged, carries out an assessment, and notifies the relevant Permit Authority. Work outside the lower categories' limits is considered against the next category up; ask a building surveyor which applies to your wall.About retaining wall height and approval | a retaining wall outside the lower categories' limits | Director of Building Control (Tasmania): Determination, Categories of Building and Demolition Work, Version 1.4 (12 March 2021) · read |

This lists each source's own lines as read. It is not legal advice, and it sets no price. The two lowest-risk categories' height lines are stated in the text above, from the Determination's own wording.
What decides the scope
Height comes first. The State's Determination sorts a retaining wall by the ground it holds back: 500 mm within 1500 mm of a property boundary, a road or a right-of-way path, otherwise 1.2 m, in Category 1; up to 1.8 m, engineer designed, in Category 2; no height limit in Category 3, which needs a Building Surveyor. Where the wall sits comes next, then the digging and filling around it, then whether hazard-area mapping bears on the site: the Determination lists work in natural Hazard Areas among the limits on low-risk work. Planning approval is a separate question. All of this sits before any rate: ask the provider what the quote assumes about each.
What the checker lists
The checker below lists each State and City of Launceston line we could read about a retaining wall, a consumer-guarantee line and the Before You Dig line, with its source and read date. The height lines for the two lowest-risk categories are stated in the text above and on the height page, from the Determination's own wording, and are not repeated as table rows. No fee is listed: the City's 2026/27 item for a retaining wall inspection is set out, with its year and what it leaves open, in the article on the City's fee line. No source read for this site sets a price for building a wall, so ask the provider for a written quote and what it assumes.
