Cost

How much does retaining walls cost in Launceston?

We do not answer that with a price, because no government source sets one for a retaining wall. What can move a job before any rate is how much ground the wall holds back, how close it is to a boundary, whether hazard-area mapping bears on the site, and who builds it. Ask the provider for a written quote and what it assumes. The costs page sets out the rules that can apply. The costs page's Retaining wall costs and rules check lists the Tasmanian lines that can apply to a retaining wall, each with its source.

What are the State's height lines for a retaining wall?

The Director of Building Control's Determination lists a retaining wall in Category 1 up to 500 mm of retained ground within 1500 mm of a boundary, a road or a right-of-way path, and otherwise up to 1.2 m; in Category 2 up to 1.8 m, engineer designed; and in Category 3, Notifiable Work, with no height limit, where a Building Surveyor must be engaged. Ask a Building Surveyor which category your wall falls in.

  1. height of the ground to be retained

The State's Determination starts from how much ground the wall holds back: 500 mm within 1500 mm of a boundary, a road or a right-of-way path, otherwise 1.2 m, in its lowest-risk category.

Maximum height of the ground to be retained is 500mm where the wall is located within 1500mm of a property boundary, a road or a path that is a right of way on another property;Otherwise the maximum height to be retained is 1.2m

  2. Building Surveyor

A retaining wall with no height limit is Notifiable Work, and the Determination says it needs a Building Surveyor.

Process

How is a retaining wall's height measured?

The Determination says the measurement of a height of a retaining wall includes the distance between the ground level in front of the wall and the level of the ground that is retained. Measure from the ground in front of the wall to the ground it holds back, not the height of the wall's face above its footing.

Does the City of Launceston set its own wall rules?

On the pages we read, the City restates the State's four categories of building work and asks you to contact its Council Building Department before commencing any building or plumbing work. Its Building Permits page does not name retaining walls, so the height lines on this site are the State's. Its Fees and Charges 2026/27 lists an item for a retaining wall inspection, set out with its year in our article on the City's fee line. Ask the City what applies to your wall.

Timing

How quickly can someone get to me?

We cannot promise a time. It depends on the provider's bookings. Form and phone enquiries are passed to a local provider, who contacts you directly.

How long does approval take?

We cannot say: no page we read gives a time for a retaining wall. Ask the City's Building Department and, where one is needed, the Building Surveyor, and ask the provider what the quote assumes about timing.

Permits and approvals

Does a retaining wall need a planning permit?

The State's Determination says there is no connection between the requirement for planning approval and the category of building work: a wall may need a planning permit and not a building permit, or the other way round. The City says planning controls the use and development of land and gives a PlanBuild enquiry that shows the zone and code standards that may apply to a property. Whether your wall needs a planning permit is for the City to say.

Service area

Which suburbs do you cover?

Launceston. Four pages are written around one sourced fact each: South Launceston, Invermay, Newstead and Windermere. The rest of the City of Launceston area is covered on the same terms.

Do you build retaining walls yourselves?

No. This site is run by a marketing company, which passes each enquiry to an independent qualified local provider. The provider inspects, quotes and does any work itself; we have no crews or plant, and we do not say whether any wall needs an approval.
