What the City of Launceston's 2026/27 fee schedule lists for a retaining wall, and what it does not say
By Artigellence ·
The City of Launceston's Fees and Charges 2026/27 lists an item named "Accredited Practitioner - Retaining Wall (includes up to 2 inspections)". The schedule does not say what the item covers for a given wall or who pays it; its GST status column reads "Taxable $" for that line (page 22), so ask the City what it covers for your wall. This article states no amount, and nothing here is a price for building a wall. The Retaining wall costs and rules check lists every line with its source.

A bank, a garden and a wall to hold it
Take an owner in Launceston with a sloping back garden who wants to hold back a bank. The first question is how much ground the wall will retain, because the State's Determination sorts a retaining wall by that height: up to 500 mm within 1500 mm of a boundary, a road or a right-of-way path, otherwise 1.2 m, in its lowest-risk category, then 1.8 m, engineer designed, then walls with no height limit as Notifiable Work.
The wall limits are the State's, not the City's
The City of Launceston's Building Permits page, as we read it on 6 October 2026, restates the State's four categories of building work and asks you to contact its Council Building Department before commencing any building or plumbing work. It does not name retaining walls. In the City's saved pages, the only wall-specific text we found is one line in its fee schedule, and its Boundary Walls and Fences page is worded for fences.
What the fee line says
The City's Fees and Charges 2026/27 lists an item named "Accredited Practitioner - Retaining Wall (includes up to 2 inspections)". It does not define the term used in the item's name. Its GST status column reads "Taxable $" for that line (page 22). It does not say that the item is what an owner pays for any given wall.
That is all the line says. It is the City's published item, with its year. This site states no amount for it and sets no price for building a wall.
What to ask the City first
Ask the Council Building Department what the item covers, whether it applies to your wall, what applies now and whether GST is included. Ask which category your wall falls in, and whether a Building Surveyor is needed. Get the answers in writing before the machine arrives.
The City sets its own fees and they change. This site records the day the pages were read, 6 October 2026. Read the City's current pages before you rely on anything here.
